Cessna CR3 24 inch free flight scale model

Cessna CR3 24 inch free flight scale model

$60.00

This is a short kit for the Cessna CR3 racer from the late thirties (see video here). This particular kit spans 24 inches and was designed with the FAC Thomson trophy mass launch event in mind. Kit comes with all of the sheet wood (1/16” , 3/32” and 3/16” balsa) required to build the model, a jig patterns sheet that you can attach to a sheet of foam (3 mm deperon foam works great for this) or balsa to make the simple fuselage jig, and some art for the pilot, prop and cockpit. It will also include a Vacformed Canopy and all of the plywood parts required for the front end, rear peg and K&P or Gizmo Geezer adjustable thrust button options. Note you can buy the version with built-up ribs (complex build) or sheet ribs (simple build) select this option when you make your purchase.

Flying Notes:

The prtotoype of this design really likes to fly right-right (despite my best efforts to make it fly left) so I would build it with symmetrical washout on both wing tips (about 1/8th inch). Flying is fairly straight forward. Set the CG stab as shown on the plan and do your first test flights on low power (200 turns). I used a 25g 8 strand motor made up from 1/8th FAI tan supersport rubber. This motor should be capable of about 1800 turns max. I have not pushed that far yet but I find that she will do well over a minute on 1600 turns. If you put her in a thermal she is quite capable of going out of sight so you might want to put a DT on her. If you need a DT timer you can get one here.

Ordering:

I now offer one version of this kit. You get a short kit with plans and patterns for the formers and the fuselage jig. If you want tissue you can go to the tissue art page and add this to your cart. If you want a prop (I think a 12” plastic prop wpuld be ideal) you can buy a prop on the prop page.
